<br /></div>
Here's a few things I did recently. Hopefully some more to come soon? It's always hard to say with NDA's, and freelance which gets in the way of personal projects....<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nRzd7jPVP2I/VW0tiQy_J2I/AAAAAAAADAg/mDt8HNCbpQI/s1600/5-11-arabiamtn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="161" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nRzd7jPVP2I/VW0tiQy_J2I/AAAAAAAADAg/mDt8HNCbpQI/s320/5-11-arabiamtn.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Went hiking at Arabia Mountain near Atlanta. Really cool area, took some pictures and painted one.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qlKK8A8uTsU/VW0tmCX0u3I/AAAAAAAADAo/tTuj_vPOLws/s1600/AnnaChristenson-Rogue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qlKK8A8uTsU/VW0tmCX0u3I/AAAAAAAADAo/tTuj_vPOLws/s320/AnnaChristenson-Rogue.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A recent character, which if you follow me elsewhere you've already seen.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Bs_pbcJjhng/VW0tyfQKg8I/AAAAAAAADAw/khS6wVBauVk/s1600/Ilyanav2-AChristenson.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Bs_pbcJjhng/VW0tyfQKg8I/AAAAAAAADAw/khS6wVBauVk/s320/Ilyanav2-AChristenson.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started a new piece based on an older character. </div>

Something I wanted to try was taking a photo, but changing elements to be more unique. Here is one attempt- could use some more practice with textures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iBwPjaeXUSI/VHVYH6A9koI/AAAAAAAAC48/2MD5ad9oLUY/s1600/11-22-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iBwPjaeXUSI/VHVYH6A9koI/AAAAAAAAC48/2MD5ad9oLUY/s1600/11-22-14.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkxO1PjwUaM/VHVYOgyM8CI/AAAAAAAAC5E/4FoazkUJt7w/s1600/14573684445_975fbc6b1e_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkxO1PjwUaM/VHVYOgyM8CI/AAAAAAAAC5E/4FoazkUJt7w/s1600/14573684445_975fbc6b1e_b.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>

I filled my plate very quickly with a lot of freelance work, which has kept me very, very busy, while also applying for openings at studios, talking to art directors and recruiters, all while trying to consider what I might want to do next artistically. <br />
<br />
It has been interesting balancing all the work while also trying to do more reading and exploratory sketchbook work, which had really fallen off over the last few years (yikes!)<br />
<br />
Here is a piece that I did some time ago, as is usually the case with contract work. I worked with Zoe Robinson and Andy Christensen art directing. As always, its great to work with them. This piece was definitely kind of a new challenge for me, but I really had a lot of fun designing the armor and painting all the glowing, whispy magic. There is another piece I did around the same time for this project, but you'll just have to wait for the game to come out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This one was started for the Color and Light class on cgma. I was lucky enough to take it this summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4zkswwDiGS4/VEM5PQrF0hI/AAAAAAAAC3k/VhKoB8oIYW4/s1600/AChristenson-MothEater.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4zkswwDiGS4/VEM5PQrF0hI/AAAAAAAAC3k/VhKoB8oIYW4/s1600/AChristenson-MothEater.jpg" height="242" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The other news I have is not so fun.<br />
<br />
I was laid off from my job as a concept artist at Turbine last week. Which is a bummer because after three years I think I was actually getting used to the concept of people.<br />
<br />
If you are looking for a concept artist (I am willing to move for a full-time position), or need a contract artist or freelance, please email me and be sure to take a look at my website. I happily do both characters, environments, props,etc.<br />
<br />
Also, if you are not looking for a concept artist, but are looking for 3d, VFX, animation, producers... please let me know and I can also try to hook you up with those people as well. Turbine let go a lot of people.Anna Christensonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01054062234983824738noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7849955160253865096.post-28539181052057839352014-08-26T13:32:00.000-04:002014-08-26T13:34:11.989-04:00Studies and a sketchI have been taking one of the CGMA classes the month (Color and Light). It's been really awesome.<br />
I won't bore you with the studies of spheres and materials (although I found the material spheres very helpful- it's a great way of digesting information).<br />
<br />
Here are some photo studies from the class however. These were very quick studies, painted very small. The idea was just to capture the color/lighting information rather than all the tiny details. I'm sure I could have noodled on the city forever.<br />
<br />
I think in the future it might be more useful to take these studies and extend the scene, or significantly alter the shapes of the elements within. It would really help to digest the information better. The city study ended up pretty lame- I have much more practice painting environments. Yet, I find the repetitive, grid-like, quality of cities interesting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1KJqgbJMGhM/U_zCqW5VA0I/AAAAAAAAC2o/X1fwr4-GRBg/s1600/AChristensonwk4-lineup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1KJqgbJMGhM/U_zCqW5VA0I/AAAAAAAAC2o/X1fwr4-GRBg/s1600/AChristensonwk4-lineup.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I also took a break from all my freelance work to do a stylized version of Ged- the same design as last time. I'm probably going to finish it up, I am pretty happy with how his face turned out. Working this way is really fun for me- I like jumping back and forth between this and realism.<br />

<br />
I was pretty excited to do the Wonder Woman portrait (the concept is by Devon Cady-Lee). I actually did all of this illustration on my off hours.<br />

A WW2 tank inspired skin for Mecha Superman was the first character I did on the project. (Hunter Schulz did a really kick ass portrait of him... its on the site if you want to check it out! www.infinitecrisis.com/en/media/wallpapers)<br />
<br />
Hopefully more to come soon! There is another skin and character out that are up on the IC site, but I'll have to make sure I can post those before I share. =)<br />

I wanted to explore something a little bit between Dune and Star Wars. I think a lot of the design elements from my last character, Sparrowhawk, were reused here, which I am cool with. It is nice to explore a theme I've been really into pattern and cloth lately.<br />
<br />
I do wish I'd spent the time to think of more story for her. When I was younger, I'd always have a running novel in my head for each character I did. Somewhere along the way I lost that. I think it's time to get it back.<br />

One side of me felt like I should keep this more realistic and down-to-earth, and the other side of me is wondering why I didn't just going insane with it- so maybe I'll explore that path too.</div>

Wanted to add a border, as I felt it would make it feel better as a stand-alone image.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hvBWiJgZCG0/UtHWGRTMv7I/AAAAAAAABbs/BM01w5NnAF0/s1600/JasmineSilverNeedle-small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hvBWiJgZCG0/UtHWGRTMv7I/AAAAAAAABbs/BM01w5NnAF0/s1600/JasmineSilverNeedle-small.jpg" height="320" width="251" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had pretty good intentions on finishing a series of these ladies- all based on types of tea (this one in particular is "Jasmine Silver Needle"). But my interest in it has been very off and on. I think they are cute, but I also feel the appeal of them is to a younger audience- for some reason I envision them as something young girls between 12 and 16 would like (because essentially this is what I drew at that age), and grandmas. I could be wrong though. Is this a series that you, my viewers, would like to see more of? Perhaps as a group these paintings would feel less geared towards that age bracket however. At the moment I am seeing plain black tea as having a south-western vibe, and that is definitely not a thing I was into as an adolescent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, I recently put a few pieces up on InPrnt for sale as prints. If you've ever wanted to own a print of my work, now is your chance! I'll post some more artwork soon.</div>

I have been doing some oil still life paintings lately as a way to get used to painting traditionally, but also do some work from life studying form and color. But really, there is nothing better than holding a little painting in your hand (this one is about 5 x 5 in).<br />

Here are some things that I have already shared elsewhere on the web.<br />
<br />
The first is a piece I finished a while back. The second is one I've been working on a bit. Inspiration for it goes in waves (I've really been struggling with making art on my free time lately).<br />
<br />
<br />

The idea was based on the Norse goddess Freyja, but I wanted to put her in a 1930's inspired setting.. which turned a bit sci-fi. Designing the car was a challenge as I really never do anything industrial, and it was pretty strictly based off of a <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1934_Mercedes_Benz_500_K_Special_Roadster_3215_-_Flickr_-_nemor2.jpg">1930s Mercedes.</a><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While working on this piece, I was thinking a lot about what inspires us to work, because I was very off and on inspired by this piece- which really has been a conundrum with art in general. I think I've always gotten a bit of drive just from the act of painting itself and out of trying to please whoever is commissioning the piece- but at the same time a lot of that is tied in with if I think the project is worth-while (the paycheck, while important, isn't as important as the emotional investment in the idea. I think that is part of why we will do personal work for free, but will not work underpaid or for free for someone else and actually find it insulting beyond the obvious 'cant put food on the table with no income'). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think sometimes ideas are inspiring just because of the novelty of them (hot fantasy babe, the "coolness" factor of an object or a hero), but there are also times I wish for some subtlety- for secondary meanings or information left unsaid.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I tired while working on this because it didn't hold a lot of emotional investment to me, so I decided to leave it where it is and search out some new ideas.</div>

Here's my most recent piece, "Fate."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I recently purchased a lightly used Cintiq for home use, so I've been painting a little more. I still find only have 2 hr chunks each evening difficult, but hopefully with time I will learn to be more focused with my free time and speed up the pace.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This piece is based off of one of the gods in a story I am working on. The basic idea behind it is that these gods are primarily just pure being, and so are essentially devoid of thought. In essence, it is humans who give them shape and motivations in their own minds. From time to time, humans will "encounter" one of these beings in their wandering of the world and through space travel, and the being will manifest itself in that human's mind. If the human is strong or wise enough, they will be able to at least partially understand the essential nature of that god, and because of that, they often become deemed as prophets. (Don't worry if that makes no sense, I'm still working it out!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was initially going to have this god hovering over a planet with a map on it. In the end, the rest of the pantheon would also hover around the planet (sort of like spokes on a wheel). However, I really wanted to finish the piece, so I substituted a nebula until I get the planet's map formed properly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tm1S8wYx4rw/UFUwI-GhrnI/AAAAAAAAAx0/YvIgKOSrs3w/s1600/Fate-finalsm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tm1S8wYx4rw/UFUwI-GhrnI/AAAAAAAAAx0/YvIgKOSrs3w/s320/Fate-finalsm.jpg" width="140" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a walk-through of my process:</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ffaJr1f9PAc/UCiF0CBzqWI/AAAAAAAAAw4/phToVnvGB6w/s1600/power-of-earth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="232" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ffaJr1f9PAc/UCiF0CBzqWI/AAAAAAAAAw4/phToVnvGB6w/s320/power-of-earth.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off, here is the background story about this piece (just copy/pasted from what I originally wrote on FB).</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;">This painting has been through some crazy stuff.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;">I started it back last November, right before/around when I was hired as a temp at Turbine. My new schedule had me working on it off and on for those first few months. Since then it has seen me in a full time position at Turbine, two moves... well, if you know me you'll know that the last 8 or 9 months have </span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: inherit; line-height: 18px;">been insane. I think I could effectively say this piece might sum up 2012 in terms of time span and events.</span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />For a while I was lucky to sneak in 30min at lunch, an hour after work- but overall not much more than an hour or two each month, with some random spurts of time. It's kind of disgusting for me how long this took, as someone who is used to finishing a piece in a few days to two weeks (although personal pieces can drag on sometimes since they often do get put on hold, but never this long!).<br /><br />It was originally started as a MtG portfolio piece, but I also wanted to give off the feeling of power, particularly that of 'man' through nature.<br /><br />Needless to say, I am at the point where I can't stand looking at this piece or having it sit in the back of my mind any longer, so I am calling it done and moving on! It was a good learning experience, and I think accomplished what it needs to for me right now.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4PqPWN9J3fs/UCiF1mAwpUI/AAAAAAAAAxA/5qvUOlxCVjA/s1600/step-by-step.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4PqPWN9J3fs/UCiF1mAwpUI/AAAAAAAAAxA/5qvUOlxCVjA/s320/step-by-step.jpg" width="85" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Next up, I thought I would share some step-by-step of working through this piece.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I ended up doing a lot of thumbnails- more than I show on the sheet. I was working out a number of different ideas at the time, so I put them on one long sheet and let one flow into the other. I think what you are seeing here is what I ended up running by my critgroup to see what they thought.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I took some reference, and developed the sketch further. I ended up finding some really cool fish skeletons online, which really inspired the faces.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--0hee3C2iQc/UCiHf4zyyRI/AAAAAAAAAxI/DlMmenygkh0/s1600/Fish_skeleton_by_madamemonty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--0hee3C2iQc/UCiHf4zyyRI/AAAAAAAAAxI/DlMmenygkh0/s320/Fish_skeleton_by_madamemonty.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2-rh77hz-xs/UCiHgb2Y1BI/AAAAAAAAAxM/6DpsgWXbpEE/s1600/silk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="136" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2-rh77hz-xs/UCiHgb2Y1BI/AAAAAAAAAxM/6DpsgWXbpEE/s320/silk.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> I actually took the black and white thumbnail and just copied it onto a fresh sheet, and traced over it. Sometimes I think a bit of the movement from the original sketch can get lost, and I wanted to try to make sure I kept the placement I'd liked from the thumbnail.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">After that, it was a matter of roughing out the color with a multiply layer, and then just digging in and painting the piece.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; display: inline;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">A lot of pieces get moved or kind of </span></span><span style="line-height: 18px;">develop</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"> themselves along the way for me, even though I do generally keep pretty </span></span></span><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">strictly</span></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"> to the original composition. But bits like how the roots would actually twine together, how the ground plane was going to work, and how the magic was going to look were all things that sort of developed organically. So many elements were a new challenge in this piece, that I think it led to a lot of repainting- but the extra development time here in order to learn is something I will have stored away for a future painting. I did the magic last, although I did have an overlay and hard light layer with it roughed in which I toggled on and off. The reason was so I wouldn't feel hampered painting around it. </span></span></div>
<br />

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; display: inline;">
<span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I think finishing this piece lifted a burden off my shoulders. I'm really looking forward to the next pieces down the pipeline- and maybe in another month or two I'll take the </span></span><span style="line-height: 18px;">plunge</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"> and seek out some freelance work to add to my evening schedule, although that is still to be decided. =)</span></span></span></div>
